Yoli Truth: What Soft Drinks Are Doing To Your Body

Soda, pop, cola, soft drink — whatever you call it, it is one of the worst beverages that you could be drinking for your health. As the debate for whether to put a tax on the sale of soft drinks continues, you should know how they affect your body so that you can make an informed choice on your own.
Soft drinks are hard on your health
Soft drinks contain little to no vitamins or other essential nutrients. However, it is what they do contain that is the problem: caffeine, carbonation, simple sugars — or worse, sugar substitutes — and often food additives such as artificial coloring, flavoring, and preservatives.
A lot of research has found that consumption of soft drinks in high quantity, especially by children, is responsible for many health problems that include tooth decay, nutritional depletion, obesity, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease.
Why the sugar in soft drinks isn’t so sweet
Most soft drinks contain a high amount of simple sugars. The USDA recommendation of sugar consumption for a 2,000-calorie diet is a daily allotment of 10 teaspoons of added sugars. Many soft drinks contain more than this amount!
Just why is too much sugar so unhealthy? Well, to start, let’s talk about what happens to you as sugar enters your body. When you drink sodas that are packed with simple sugars, the pancreas is called upon to produce and release insulin, a hormone that empties the sugar in your blood stream into all the tissues and cells for usage. The result of overindulging in simple sugar is raised insulin levels. Raised blood insulin levels beyond the norm can lead to depression of the immune system, which in turn weakens your ability to fight disease.
Something else to consider is that most of the excess sugar ends up being stored as fat in your body, which results in weight gain and elevates risk for heart disease and cancer. One study found that when subjects were given refined sugar, their white blood cell count decreased significantly for several hours afterwards. Another study discovered that rats fed a high-sugar diet had a substantially elevated rate of breast cancer when compared to rats on a regular diet.
The health effects of diet soda
You may come to the conclusion that diet or sugar-free soda is a better choice. However, one study discovered that drinking one or more soft drinks a day — and it didn’t matter whether it was diet or regular — led to a 30% greater chance of weight gain around the belly.
Diet soda is filled with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, or saccharin. These artificial sweeteners pose a threat to your health. Saccharin, for instance, has been found to be carcinogenic, and studies have found that it produced bladder cancer in rats.
Aspartame, commonly known as nutrasweet, is a chemical that stimulates the brain to think the food is sweet. It breaks down into acpartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol at a temperature of 86 degrees. (Remember, your stomach is somewhere around 98 degrees.) An article put out by the University of Texas found that aspartame has been linked to obesity. The process of stimulating the brain causes more cravings for sweets and leads to carbohydrate loading.
Carbonation depletes calcium
Beverages with bubbles contain phosphoric acid, which can severely deplete the blood calcium levels; calcium is a key component of the bone matrix. With less concentration of calcium over a long time, it can lower deposition rates so that bone mass and density suffer. This means that drinking sodas and carbonated water increases your risk of osteoporosis.
Add in the caffeine usually present in soft drinks, and you are in for even more trouble. Caffeine can deplete the body’s calcium, in addition to stimulating your central nervous system and contributing to stress, a racing mind, and insomnia.
Skip the soda and go for:
• Yoli
You knew I was going to add this…Incorporating wholesome Vitamin C and a proprietary blend of some of the most popular ingredients of the day: acai, goji, pomegranate, resveratrol, white tea extract, Alkaplex, a ph enhancing ingredient, plus live probiotics and enzymes, Yoli Blast Caps deliver to the market a healthy alternative to all of the nutrient deprived, sweetened beverages most people are consuming nowadays.
• Fresh water
Water is a vital beverage for good health. Each and every cell needs water to perform its essential functions. Since studies show that tap water is filled with contaminants, antibiotics, and a number of other unhealthy substances, consider investing in a quality carbon-based filter for your tap water.
On the go? Try using a stainless steel thermos or glass bottle, filled with filtered water. Enhance the flavor of your water with a refreshing infusion of basil, mint leaves, and a drop of honey.
• Fruit Juice
If you are a juice drinker, try watering down your juice to cut back on the sugar content. Buy a jar of organic 100% juice, especially cranberry, acai, pomegranate, and then dilute three parts filtered water to one part juice. You will get a subtle sweet taste and the benefit of antioxidants. After a couple of weeks, you will no longer miss the sweetness of sugary concentrated juices.
• Tea
Tea gently lifts your energy and has numerous health benefits. Black, green, white, and oolong teas all contain antioxidant polyphenols. In fact, tea ranks as high or higher than many fruits and vegetables on the ORAC scale, the score that measures antioxidant potential of plant-based foods.
Herbal tea does not have the same antioxidant properties, though it is still a great beverage choice with other health benefits, such as inducing calming and relaxing effects.
If tea doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, try adding cinnamon or a little honey, which has important health benefits that refined sugar lacks. Drink up!
I hope you find the ways and means to avoid soft drinks. I invite you to visit often and share your own personal health and longevity tips with me.
May you live long, live strong, and live happy!
Yoli Truth: Junk food gets air time on kids’ channels
October 29, 2009

As parents we have to keep a close eye on the messages that our kids are getting. Unfortunately, advertisers are taking advantage of our children when watching TV…
There are good kids programming out there that don’t run these types of commercials and some that are commercial free.
Junk food gets air time on kids’ channels
Nearly all the food advertised on leading television channels aimed at toddlers to tweens is unhealthy, newly released research shows.
Brian Cook, a research consultant at Toronto Public Health, analyzed advertisements shown on Teletoon and YTV over four days in January during children’s peak viewing times geared to kids ages two to 11.
The preliminary results, released on Wednesday at a conference about public health nutrition reform hosted by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest, show that food ads made up the single largest category, at 37 percent. And an overwhelming number of them – 95 percent – were for unhealthy foods.
Breakfast cereals with high sugar and low fibre content represented the single largest percentage of unhealthy food ads, representing 28 per cent.
The remaining three categories each represented 24 percent of the ads: fast food restaurants and meals, snack foods, and high-fat, sugary or salty spreads, soups or pastas.
Milk and juice made up the bulk of the five percent of ads for healthy foods.
The sample was based on 41 hours of programming, of which 16 hours had channel promotions in place of product advertising.
The data was collected after Canada’s leading food and beverage companies launched, in April 2007, the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary code to promote healthier dietary choices and lifestyles to children under the age of 12.
By February, 11 of the 16 companies had already implemented their commitments; the remaining companies have agreed to have their commitments fully implemented by the end of 2008.
Among the core principles, they have committed to devoting at least 50 per cent of their ads to promote products that represent healthy dietary choices or include healthy lifestyle.
Cook said there are too many gaps in the industry initiative to make it effective.
“The self-regulatory route just doesn’t work,” he said in an interview, pointing to a recent analysis conducted by Dr. David McKeon, medical officer of health at Toronto Public Health.
Cereals defined as “healthier dietary choices” for children include Froot Loops, Reese’s Puffs, Corn Pops, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Alpha Bits and Kool-Aid Singles.
Janet Feasby is vice-president of standards at Advertising Standards Canada, a national advertising industry self-regulatory body overseeing the initiative. She said the current approach is sound because products that make the cut for a healthier dietary choice must meet established scientific and government standards.
They include foods that meet the standards for participating in the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s Health Check program and foods that meet criteria for nutrient content claims in Canada’s Food Guide, namely those with “free or “low” claims for calories as well as fat, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar and salt.
“This is an industry initiative that they’ve taken on their own to be responsible and to make a difference in the childhood obesity issue,” said Feasby.
The preliminary findings are part of a broader global project coordinated by Australian researchers looking at TV food ads to children in 12 countries.
Yoli Truth: Top 10 Secrets To Alkalizing The Body
October 28, 2009
Disclaimer: Yoli products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Before we dive into the secrets…here are some aspects regarding pH you may find useful…
The body’s pH is measured on a scale of 0 – 14. Midrange at 7 is where the pH is balanced. Anything below 7 is acidic and a state where your body does not function as designed. Above 7 is called Alkaline. Alkaline is the state in which your body thrives. Toxins cannot live in an alkaline environment. At the bottom of the list is a chart of foods on the pH scale for a reference.
Making the changes below can drastically improve the way you feel. I’ve experienced it first hand. I hope this information will help you improve your life and well-being.
Here’s how to rid your body of that over-acidic state:
Alkalizing Secret #1 — Drink Pure Alkaline Water – lots of it! – Yoli fits the bill. Even if you use another water source the patented Alka-Plex technology will raise the pH of any water that you use.
Pure water meaning water that is filtered. At a minimum, you should be drinking 7 ounces of water for every 10 lbs of your body weight. So, if you weigh 130lbs, you need to drink a minimum of 91 ounces of pure water (that’s about 3 liters). Pure water meaning water that is filtered – the finest choice is an alkaline ionization unit (Jupiter is one of the finest on the market). If you don’t have this resource available, distilled water is a great choice with reverse osmosis coming next. Alkaline water means water with a pH over 7.5. Alkaline water adds oxygen to your water and helps to neutralize acids. A simple way to alkalize your water is with a dash of baking soda. There are also wonderful alkalizing agents you can purchase to buffer and alkalize the water.
(P.S. Avoid: coffee, black tea and sodas. – These drinks are highly acidic and do not count towards your daily water intake)
Alkalizing Secret #2 — Eat Celery…. This is one of the most alkaline foods you can eat. It quickly neutralizes acids. Eat it before, after or during a meal. Celery is so high in water content that is also works as an excellent thirst quencher. Celery is excellent for digestion.
Alkalizing Secret #3 – Eat Green Salads – forget the cheese and croutons!
Always have a green salad on hand. Make a huge salad every 3 days and keep it in your fridge to make it very easy to alkalize your body. Some greens that have the highest water content are: cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, celery, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, cauliflower, carrots, and onions. A great dressing would be cold pressed extra virgin olive oil with some lemon juice. Keep this in a bowl in your fridge (tip: add cucumbers and tomatoes right before eating). Eat a HUGE salad with every meal!
Alkalizing Secret #4 — Switch from cow’s milk, to coconut or almond milk.
Cows milk has shown to produce an abundance of mucous in the human body. There are also few adults who can metabolize the protein in cow’s milk properly. This protein, casein, is what a cow’s metabolism needs for proper health, not for a human beings health. Also note that most dairy cows are injected with hormones such as the Bovine Growth Hormone to increase their milk production. Many of these hormones have potentially horrific side effects that can be passed on when consumed. Coconut and almond milk are excellent alternatives to dairy. They are well worth trying out.
Alkalizing Secret #5 — Avoid artificial sweeteners! – Yoli only uses the natural sweeteners
This includes: NutraSweet, Sucralose, Aspartame, Saccharin…. Not only are these acidic they also have other highly detrimental effects on the nervous system and neurological disease. Saccharin even tells you right on the package that it may cause cancer.
There is one natural sugar substitute that has had no reported side effects: Stevia. <- its in Yoli
Alkalizing Secret #6 — Eat a grapefruit in the morning wait 15 minutes before ingesting a carb or protein.
Grapefruit, similar to lemons, is also alkalizing when ingested. Some people believe grapefruit to be a miracle fruit and I tend to support that group. Grapefruits have a very high water content and are highly alkalizing. Eat one first thing in the morning, and wait 15 minutes before eating a carbohydrate or protein (one or the other – do not mix). (The 15-minute suggestion is in accordance with proper food combining and allows your system to more easily digest. This recommendation applies to eating any fruit – fruit shouldn’t be combined with any other food type. Once eaten, wait 15 before consuming any other food type…ie: protein or carbohydrate). <- Maybe Yoli will come out with a grapefruit blast drink!
Alkalizing Secret #7 — Eliminate consumption of red meat, pork, lamb…substitute chicken, turkey or fresh fish in small quantities. Red meats, pork and lamb are highly acidic a very low water content, not to mention being hard on the digestive system. If you must have meat, opt for chicken or turkey. Fresh wild fish is another excellent route to take.
Alkalizing Secret #8 – Reduce stress daily by adding yoga, tai chi, meditation, and proper breathing. An additional factor that adds to acidosis (acidic bodies) is stress. When the body moves into stress mode the digestive system shuts down and toxins cease to be eliminated. Thus the more toxins you keep in your system, the more the body will store them away (acids) in fat cells! Anything we can do to calm the mind/body will have a huge impact on alkalizing the body.
Alkalizing Secret #9– Drink a top quality super green supplement. – Yoli Truth includes huge amounts of minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, probiotics and more – a Super Greens Blast is in the works also.
Organic super greens are known to be some of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. They infuse the body with easily absorbed vitamins, minerals, amino acids chlorophyll, enzymes, phytonutients and alkaline salts that help neutralize acids in the blood and tissues.
Alkalizing Secret #10 — Minimize/Avoid… processed and refined foods.
That means anything made with white flour and white sugar or food coloring. Our bodies were not designed to digest these chemicals and so it must do one of three things:
- Eliminate them (if you are not hydrating properly this is very hard to do) or
- Neutralize them by pulling alkaline buffers where it can – from your bones leaching calcium, or from your blood, leaching iron. or
- Park them away (in fat cells). Bottom line here – stay away from processed food as much as possible.
In Summary: If you will start out by going down the list of tips and add one secret each day, there’s a tremendous possibility that you will be amazed with what you experience. Simply increasing the amount and type of water you drink can and often will be a HUGE shift in how you feel. Let me tell you – it only gets better! And remember…the name of the game is progress not perfection.
Be gentle with yourself – for many people, these secrets represent a huge life change. I urge you to educate yourself on alkalinity and the pH balance.
Use Yoli to help you get a jump start on this list of alkalizing secrets…

Yoli Truth: Kids mimic parents’ diets from an early age
October 28, 2009
Disclaimer: Yoli products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
With Yoli about to take the beverage industry by storm, I wanted to share with you even more ways that we as parents can make a difference in the lives and wellbeing of our children. This study shows that as parents if we improve our own eating habits and the drinks we consume that our children will follow in our foot steps.
Sometimes the obvious has to be stated for it to sink in. For most people, I recommend just replacing the existing sodas and drinks that you are currently buying with Yoli’s Truth Citrus Health Blast. This will give you and the kids a better option without the need to spend more money on beverages. Also, if you drink coffee in the morning, try to replace that with Yoli. I found that I get similar energy levels that last much longer.
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Parents who want their preschoolers to eat their vegetables may need to take a hard look at their own eating habits, new research suggests.
In a study of 120 young children who were allowed to “buy” food from a play grocery store, researchers found that even 2-year-olds tended to mirror their parents’ usual food choices.
Children who stocked up on sweets, sugary drinks and salty snacks generally had parents whose typical grocery list featured such items. Similarly, children with the healthiest shopping habits seemed to be following their parents’ lead as well.
The findings, reported in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, suggest that even very young children do not indiscriminately reach for candy when given the chance. Instead, they seem to already be forming food preferences — potentially lasting ones — based on their parents’ shopping carts.
“The data suggest that children begin to assimilate and mimic their parents’ food choices at a very young age, even before they are able to fully appreciate the implications of these choices,” write the researchers, led by Dr. Lisa A. Sutherland of Dartmouth Medical School in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
That, the researchers say, means that the grocery store can be like a classroom, where parents teach their children that foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains take priority over snacks and desserts.
For the study, Sutherland’s team had 120 children aged 2 to 6 years old each take a turn in a play grocery store. The children were told they could buy anything they wanted out of 133 items: “healthier” foods included fruits, vegetables, whole-grain cereals, bread and milk; “less healthy” items included desserts, candy, potato chips, soda and sugary cereals.
Parents completed questionnaires on how often they bought specific foods and beverages. All said they brought their children with them on grocery store trips.
Most of the children, the researchers found, bought some sugary, salty treats; on average, their carts were filled with equal parts healthy and unhealthy items.
However, 35 children bought significantly more healthy fare than junk food. In general, the study found, the health-consciousness of a child’s shopping cart mirrored that of her parents’ grocery list.
“Nutrition interventions for children most often begin with school-aged children,” Sutherland and her colleagues write. “This study suggests that preschool children are already forming food preferences and are attentive to food choices made by their parents.”
Giving preschoolers a taste for healthy foods, the researchers add, could ultimately make it easier for them to keep up a lifetime of smart eating.

Yoli Blast Cap Technology: How Does Freeze Drying Work?
October 21, 2009
Disclaimer: Yoli products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
I get many questions about Yoli’s products and how they work. Many people are interested in the Blast Cap technology and how it works but I think another key aspect to the Yoli mission is understanding the power of freeze drying the Yoli nutrition so that all the key ingredients are locked in.
Below is a great video on how freeze drying actually works. It should help you understand the detailed process that goes into Yoli’s nutritional products and the clear value that Yoli delivers above and beyond what you see in the current beverage market…
Why Freeze Dry?
The basic idea of freeze-drying is to completely remove water from some material, such as food, while leaving the basic structure and composition of the material intact. There are two reasons someone might want to do this with food:
“Did You Know: Freeze-drying technology was developed by NASA for the long distance Apollo missions.”
Reason #1 – Removing water keeps food from spoiling for a long period of time. Food spoils when microorganisms, such as bacteria, feed on the matter and decompose it. Bacteria may release chemicals that cause disease, or they may just release chemicals that make food taste bad. Additionally, naturally occurring enzymes in food can react with oxygen to cause spoiling and ripening.
Like people, microorganisms need water to survive, so if you remove water from food, it won’t spoil. Enzymes also need water to react with food, so dehydrating food will also stop ripening.
Reason #2 – Freeze-drying significantly reduces the total weight of the food. Most food is largely made up of water (many fruits are more than 80 to 90 percent water, in fact). Removing this water makes the food a lot lighter, which means it’s easier to transport.
The basic idea of freeze-drying is to “lock in” the composition and structure of the material by drying it without applying the heat necessary for the evaporation process. Instead, the freeze-drying process converts solid water — ice — directly into water vapor, skipping the liquid phase entirely. In the next section, we’ll find out how freeze-drying machines pull this off.

With most machines, you place the material to be preserved onto the shelves when it is still unfrozen. When you seal the chamber and begin the process, the machine runs the compressors to lower the temperature in the chamber. The material is frozen solid, which separates the water from everything around it, on a molecular level, even though the water is still present.
Next, the machine turns on the vacuum pump to force air out of the chamber, lowering the atmospheric pressure below .06 ATM. The heating units apply a small amount of heat to the shelves, causing the ice to change phase. Since the pressure is so low, the ice turns directly into water vapor. The water vapor flows out of the freeze-drying chamber, past the freezing coil. The water vapor condenses onto the freezing coil in solid ice form, in the same way water condenses as frost on a cold day.
This continues for many hours (even days) while the material gradually dries out. The process takes so long because overheating the material can significantly change the composition and structure. Additionally, accelerating the sublimation process could produce more water vapor in a period of time then the pumping system can remove from the chamber. This could rehydrate the material somewhat, degrading its quality.
Once the material is dried sufficiently, it’s sealed in a moisture-free package, often with an oxygen-absorbing material.
As long as the package is secure, the material can sit on a shelf for years and years without degrading, until it’s restored to its original form with a bit of water (a very small amount of moisture remains, so the material will eventually spoil). If everything works correctly, the material will go through the entire process almost completely unscathed!
I hope this helps you understand the enormous value that Yoli is delivering with their products. This allows us to consume an abundance of nutrition in a simple and convenient way each day.

My sister, Jordan, flew out to beautiful southern California this week to visit with me and to attend the annual Mud Run that is held each year at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA.
This annual charity fundraiser raises money that benefits all programs and services offered to Camp Pendleton military personnel and their families at low or no cost, by the Armed Services YMCA.
The Mud Run is a challenging 10K run with hills, tire obstacles, river crossings, two 5-foot walls with mud on both sides, tunnel crawl, slippery hill climb, and the final 30-foot mud pit. Along the course there will be 6 water points with personnel staged at each. This is the most fun you can have running a 10K!

October 9, 2009
Disclaimer: Yoli products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
With Americans consuming 150 lbs of sugar on average each year (per person) it’s critical that we understand the impact of this practice. The AHA (American Heart Association) says that adults consume 22 teaspoons of sugar per day and that teenagers are consuming 34 teaspoons per day. All the research points to sugary beverages as the reason for this extreme amount of sugar intake.
It’s obvious the impact on our individual weight and the enormous obesity epidemic that we face here in America but many people do not understand the other dangers with this level of sugar intake. Below is a list of 123 reasons why you and I need to stay away from sugar and make better decisions when consuming beverages on a daily basis…

Yoli Truth: US Market – Healthy Beverages For Kids To Grow By Billions In Next 2 Years

The US market for children’s food and drink will grow in value by 50 percent from $16.4bn in 2007 to $26.8bn within two years, according to a new report from New Nutrition Business.
The report, Marketing Kids’ Healthy Beverages, identifies health drinks as making the biggest gains. Fruit juice, fruit-flavored water and dairy drinks are still the biggest and most dynamic areas of the junior beverage sector as more companies recognize that parents are looking for alternatives to sugary colas and sodas.
“There are a number of factors that give fruit drinks for kids a competitive advantage over other categories,” says the report. “For one thing the “naturally healthy” image of fruit drinks makes them a suitable vehicle for health benefits – as does children’s love of fruit-flavored, sweet drinks. They are also convenient to carry and pack in lunchboxes.”
Appealing to customers
Underpinning a brand with the claim of naturalness is proving to be just as strong and profitable a trend in children’s food as in adult nutrition, according to the report.
“Across all food and beverage categories, the message that a food or food component is naturally and intrinsically healthy is one of the most appealing to consumers in all cultures,” writes the report’s author, food specialist Julian Mellentin.
As almost all of the ten case studies featured in the report illustrate, health-conscious parents are increasingly choosing products that they perceive to be as natural as possible. Increasingly they are shunning ingredients that they see as undesirable or unnatural or potentially harmful, such as added sugar and artificial sweeteners, preservatives, colors, or flavors. - (Yoli is completely natural with NO harmful ingredients)
“Being able to offer one or more of the benefits of being “free-from” dairy or wheat (to take just two examples) is essential for any brand targeting children and health conscious parents,” advises the report. “Kids’ beverages should contain no added sugar – use apple or pear juice concentrates as your sweetener, or perhaps fructose.” - (Yoli fits the bill – no sugar in Yoli)
Although beverage products should be as natural as possible, manufacturers who want to deliver a health benefit from an added ingredient should choose one that mothers accept and understand. That means, in most countries, either a probiotic or an omega-3, said the report. - (Yoli Truth includes live enzymes and probiotics)
Digestive health
Parents’ key concerns for their children’s health focus on immunity and digestive health, according to the report.
“In coming years expect to see an increasing focus on developing brands to meet these needs. Concerns around digestive health suggest an untapped opportunity for fiber and probiotics,” it predicted.
Also important is strong beverage packaging which is equally as important as products’ scientific credentials, research and development, or advertising investment.
The report is available from New Nutrition Business.

Yoli Truth: Soda Consumption and Its Link to Obesity in California
September 28, 2009

The data continues to pour out about the huge problem of consuming the sugary drinks. This data continues to support Yoli’s mission to give you an alternative to soda and the many other so-called ” healthy beverages that fill the aisles of grocery stores all over the United States.
While health officials have long suspected the link between obesity and soda consumption, research released provides the first scientific evidence of the potent role soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages play in fueling California’s expanding girth.
In the landmark study: Bubbling Over: Soda Consumption and Its Link to Obesity in California, researchers from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR) and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA) discovered a strong correlation between soda consumption and weight. Based upon data from more than 40,000 interviews conducted by the California Health Interview Surveys (CHIS), researchers found that adults who drink a soda or more per day are 27 percent more likely to be overweight than those who do not drink sodas, regardless of income or ethnicity.
“The science is clear and conclusive: soda is fueling California’s $41 billion a year obesity epidemic,” says CCPHA Executive Director Dr. Harold Goldstein, an author of the research brief. “We drink soda like water. But unlike water, soda serves up a whopping 17 teaspoons of sugar in every 20-ounce serving.”
Research shows that over the last 30 years Americans consumed 278 more calories per day even as physical activity levels remained relatively unchanged. One of the biggest changes in diet during that period was the enormous increase in soda consumption, accounting for as much as 43 percent of all new calories. According to Goldstein, that research, combined with this new data on soda consumption, offers conclusive proof of the link between soda and obesity.
And while adult soda consumption is troubling, consumption trends among children paint an even more alarming picture for the future health of California. The study found that 41 percent of young children (2-11 years of age) are drinking at least one soda or sugar-sweetened beverage every day. Adolescents (12-17) represent the biggest consumers, with 62 percent (over 2 million youths) drinking one or more sodas every day – the equivalent of consuming 39 pounds of sugar each year in soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages.
“Soda is cheap, sweet and irresistibly marketed to teens,” says the study’s lead author, Dr. Susan H. Babey, a research scientist with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. “Not enough teens know about the health and dietary risks of drinking huge quantities of what is essentially liquid sugar while television and advertising tell them it is ‘cool’ to do so.”
There were major differences in adult consumption rates by county, the study discovered. Nevertheless, the soda/obesity linkage still holds true – those who consume large amounts of soda, regardless of where they live, suffer disproportionally from obesity and overweight.
“If we are serious about tackling the obesity crisis, cutting back soda consumption has to be the top priority,” Goldstein asserts. “Parents, communities, businesses and government all have a role to play in helping to reduce consumption. We cannot afford to raise another ‘Pepsi Generation.’”
Funding for the study was provided by The California Endowment, a private statewide health foundation that is a national leader in the childhood obesity prevention movement.
“This research clearly shows the very serious health risks of drinking soda and other sweetened beverages. I hope policymakers will read this report closely and think about what they can do to combat the obesity epidemic that is clearly tied to consuming too many sodas,” says Dr. Robert K. Ross, president and CEO of The California Endowment.
